Are Dogs Allowed on Blackpool Beach?

Dog on blackpool beach

Quick answer: Yes, but not everywhere and not all year. Dogs are not allowed on the main central bathing beach between North Pier and South Pier from 1 May to 30 September. Outside that area, and outside those dates, dogs are welcome on the sands. Always check local signs on the day.

Blackpool is a great place for seaside walks with your dog. The coastline is long, the views are big, and there are plenty of easy routes on the flat. Here’s how to plan a simple, stress-free beach day with clear guidance on where and when dogs are allowed.

The seasonal rule, made simple

From 1 May to 30 September, dogs are restricted from the central bathing beach between North Pier and South Pier. This is the busiest stretch in summer and the rule helps keep it clean and safe for families.

For the rest of the year, and all year on beaches north of North Pier and south of South Pier, well-behaved dogs can enjoy the sand. Lead rules, cleaning up, and local by-laws still apply, so keep an eye on signs at each set of steps.

The best dog-friendly stretches

North Shore to BisphamHead north of North Pier and you’ll find quieter sands, long views, and a calmer pace. It’s ideal for an easy morning walk. When the tide is out, the beach feels huge. When it’s in, the Promenade still makes a lovely stroll.

South Shore towards Starr GateSouth of South Pier the pavements are wide and the sky feels endless. When the beach opens at low tide, there’s loads of space to play fetch and take photos. If the tide is high, you can still enjoy a flat walk along the Promenade.

Promenade and piersDogs are fine to walk on the Prom if kept under control. Be mindful around tram stops and busier pinch points near the Tower and Central Pier.

Tide timing for dog walks

Tide times change daily. For the best beach session, aim for the two hours either side of low tide. You’ll get firmer sand and more room to roam. If you head out and the water is near the wall, enjoy the Prom for a bit and try again later when the sand reappears.

Simple etiquette that keeps it pleasant for everyone

  • Lead on when needed. If it’s busy or near tram stops, pop the lead on until you’re past the crowds.

  • Bag it and bin it. Bins are spaced along the Promenade. Please use them.

  • Watch for channels. As the tide turns, shallow pools can fill from behind.

  • Give space. Not everyone loves dogs. A little courtesy goes a long way on narrow steps and ramps.

A relaxed dog-day plan

Morning: If low tide sits before lunch, start with a gentle seafront walk. Keep the pace easy and follow the dry sand for cleaner paws.

Afternoon: When the tide is higher, switch to a Promenade wander. Break it up with a coffee stop and a sit-down by the sea wall. If you fancy a proper meal later, book a table at our on-site Italian via Restaurant Bookings and make a night of it.

Evening: Sunset strolls are hard to beat. If you’d like a nightcap afterwards, try the intimate feel of our Champagne Bar, or head to Deano’s Cocktail Bar for a livelier finish.

Travelling with a dog: practical tips

  • Pack a small towel: Sand and sea water are part of the fun, but a quick wipe before heading back makes life easier.

  • Carry fresh water: Even on cool days, sea breezes can be drying.

  • Choose your access point: Some stairs are steep. Ramps are easier for older dogs.

  • Mind heat and glare: On bright days, early and late walks are gentler on paws and eyes.

When the central stretch is off-limits

If you’re visiting in summer, the simple approach is to start your day outside the restricted zone. Walk a quiet section first, then ride the tram back towards the buzz around the Tower for people-watching and photos. It keeps the day smooth and avoids any awkward turnarounds on the steps.

Make your base work for you

Being right on the Promenade makes dog-friendly days easier. You can step out for a quick leg stretch, pop back for a rest, then head out again at low tide without long journeys or taxis. If you want everything within easy reach, browse our seafront rooms and plan your break around the beach windows you prefer.
